The US Open continues today in Brookline, near the heart of Boston, and one seems very at home in the heart of Irish America is Shane Lowry.

Shane Lowry shot a first round 72 (+2) in the US Open yesterday putting him 6 shots behind leader Adam Hadwin.

On day one, the Offaly native wore a shirt with the Boston Celtics crest printed on the back during the opening day, in support of the East Coast side's NBA finals game against Golden State Warriors. Steve Kerr's side ended up defeating Celtics 103-90 to bring an end to their NBA Championship dreams but Lowry's decision to wear the top has only made support for the Irishman grow.

Shane Lowry came into the tournament as a dark horse bet at around 25/1 and has enjoyed a successful 2022 to date. The 2019 Open champion is ranked 24th in the world at the moment, his highest in over two years and despite his impressive year to date which has included a tie for third place at the Masters, Lowry has failed to add silverware to his trophy cabinet.

Founder of The Ringer Bill Simmons spoke about his and his hometown's support for the Irishman on a podcast previewing the US Open this week.

Simmons said:

"He's just so Boston. He's the most Boston, probably, out of any golfer we have in this.

Lowry disappointed after his first day at the US Open

Shane Lowry was -1 after the front nine but after three bogeys in his final holes, Lowry was left over par for the day and showed his frustration after the round.

Speaking after his first round, Lowry said:

"I am a bit frustrated; I think I played good enough to shoot par or better,

"It was hard out there, the wind was up, the course was tough, and you needed to be in position a lot of the time, which I was.

"I had it going lovely and then 11 was a bit of a kick in the teeth, to be honest. It was silly by me and then 12, middle of the fairway and you make bogey there and all of a sudden, you feel like you are holding on on the way in.

"On 16, I probably should have hit eight iron, but I hit seven iron over the back and missed a short putt, hit a great drive on 17 and didn't make birdie there, and I feel like I scored really badly.

"Even though I had a couple of good up and downs, I feel like two-over is probably one of the worse scores I could have shot. I don't have much time but get some food and get ready to go again tomorrow."

Shane Lowry is wearing black today for this second round. He's currently even after 4 and had a massive birdie on the second.
