The Tuesday and Wednesday before the Open Championship are crucial for punters as they look to hone down their picks for the tournament.

As part of our build-up to the Open Championship 2022, ex-Irish rugby international Stephen Ferris and pro golfer James Sugrue sat down to discuss their picks for this year's event.

The Open: James Sugrue's tips

Prior to last month's US Open, Sugrue backed Matt Fitzpatrick all the way, adding weight to the legitimacy of his picks for the Open this week.

I suppose the two guys before I came on that I had in mind were Jordan Spieth and Max Homa. I just think Spieth, even if it does get windy, I think he'll still love it, he had a top 10 last week. I just think if it does become a wedge game, that he is one of if not the best wedge player and putter in the world. Get him inside ten feet and he's a dangerous dangerous boy.

And Max Homa as well someone that I've really really followed over the last two years, just swings it beautifully. He's really into his links golf, I was reading a thing last week, when he finished one of his rounds at the Scottish Open he actually went out and played a neighbouring links course and played 18 there as well.

So he played 36 in the one day in the middle of the Scottish Open, so he's obviously getting really prepped for this week so I wouldn't be surprised to see him. He's good at everything, he's a good wedge player, good putter, good iron player, good driver, not really many weaknesses.

Stephen Ferris' tips for St Andrews

Ferris had some insider knowledge to share with us. He is very pally with some of the crew at Royal Portrush, where Brooks Koepka has been preparing for the Open Championship at St. Andrews.

For me I went with, and the only reason I'm saying this is because Brooks Koepka has been playing Royal Portrush for the last four days, five days. He'd four really good practice rounds in. He played with the head pro there a guy called Gary McNeely.

They said he was so good, his ball striking was off the charts, and if he can hole a few putts. He's 33 to 1. So that would be my outside bet.

Brooks is indeed a man for the majors, and half of his PGA Tour victories are major championships. However, over the past couple of seasons this form has dropped, and the Open Championship is the major where he has had the least amount of success.
