2025 Cheltenham Day 2 Preview

Day 2 of the Cheltenham Festival will try to follow the jam-packed drama of the opening day.

The Queen Mother Champion Chase (4 pm) is the feature race where Jonbon looks to slay his Festival jinx and win a race here in March. But it won’t be easy as the Irish challenge and a few domestic wannabes will make him fight for it up Cleeve Hill.

Willie Mullins will look to make it two for two in opening-day festival wins with Final Demand but will face stiff competition from The New Loin, trained by Don Skelton.

Mullins has the odds of being the favourite in 14:00, with Ballyburn odds of making two wins on the trot for the Irish.

Perhaps the first English win of the day could come for Nicky Henderson in the 14:40 with Impose Toi.

Meath trainer Gavin Cromwell and Stumptown will battle it against Gordan Elliott and Galvin in the Cross Country chase at 15:20.

Stumptown came agonisingly close to securing a Festival win when Angels Dawn narrowly denied them in the 2023 Kim Muir.

According to the punters out there, he heads to Cheltenham with his best chance yet, and he’s the 5-2 clear favourite to land the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase.

Stumptown produced a powerful effort to land the Glenfarclas Crystal Cup Cross Country Handicap Chase at Cheltenham’s December meeting, and he’s now become a dab hand in this sphere, winning his last three cross-country events.

While a Festival win is top of Stumptown’s agenda, a tilt at the Grand National is also on the radar.

Veteran Galvin won the National Hunt Chase and the Savills Chase in 2021 and was narrowly beaten by Delta Work in this race two years ago. The horse remains a class act and can still hold his own at the top level.

Last season, he finished fourth in the Grand National behind I Am Maximus. He has only run once since, suffering a narrow defeat in the American Grand National at Far Hills last October. Again, you cannot see Galvin not involved in this cross-country final's closing stages.

The big question of the day is, will Jonbon finally break his Cheltenham Festival duck?

He has a fantastic chance to claim his first success at jumps racing’s biggest meeting, the Champion Chase, at 16:00, having finished second in the 2022 Supreme Novices Hurdle and 2023 Arkle Novices Chase.

The Nicky Henderson-trained son of Walk In The Park has won nine Grade 1s heading into this year’s Festival, and punters expect him to add to that tally in the feature race on Wednesday afternoon. He’s undoubtedly the one they all have to beat.
