Ah the Galway races. From a purely sporting side, it is one of the high points of the Irish racing calendar. Yet away from the racing there's also another side to it. Race week is something of a double edged sword. For all the great racing action, you also have 'the characters'.

The Galway races are a glorious, if messy, magnet for 'the characters' of this country. You know this, I know this and RTÉ News must surely also know this. So when Six One decided to a live report from Ballybrit yesterday evening, you have to think they knew this is exactly what they were going to get.

John Maloney, the racecourse manager, was giving his thoughts on this year's festival when he was descended upon by the characters and one plucky individual in particular.

These chancers did themselves proud.

But they were nothing compared to this king among men who was determined to make sure his moment in the spotlight lasted as long as it possibly could.
