Samcro won a pulsating Marsh Novices' Chase in the opening race of day three at Cheltenham on Thursday.

It took a photo finish to separate the Gordon Elliot-trained runner and Melon on the line. The favourite Faugheen finished third.

"He's brave, he's as brave as a lion and he got back up with the last stride," Samcro's jockey Davy Russell said after the race.

"I was very doubtful [that I'd hold on] to be honest. I got headed and he came back again. He really wanted it today.

"Everyone in the yard put in a huge effort for this horse. They're fabulous owners and they've been so good to me throughout my career.

"Samcro was always very liked. He's a very placid horse and has a great attitude. He always tries to please you. It was very confusing with him the way he wasn't running at his best. Gordon always felt that the fire still burned in him."
