On a recent trip to Belfast I was invited along to a Belfast Giants ice-hockey game, and having a passing interest in the sport along with a fanatical obsession with The Mighty Ducks, I figured it was far too good an offer to turn down.
The match itself was excellent, hockey is a fantastic sport to watch live, but the show was well and truly stolen by the most American thing I have ever seen outside of the United States of America, as Giants' sponsors Subway brought out a man with a cannon (which of course looked like a sandwich) and he proceeded to fire full foot-long sandwiches into the crowd.
Why isn't this more of a thing in Ireland? The crowd goes absolutely nuts for free stuff, and when it's fired out of a cannon it's even better.
We salute Subway, and the Belfast Giants, for not submitting to the safety pressures surrounding freebie cannons after the infamous death of Maude Flanders in the 11th season of The Simpsons.
We are sincerely hoping to see more sports stadiums and arenas follow suit in the near future.
