Boxing Star Canelo Alvarez Explains Why He 'Envisaged' Nate Diaz Beating Conor McGregor

Mexican boxing icon Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez says he knew from Conor McGregor's demeanour that the Irishman would come unstuck against Nate Diaz at UFC 196.

The World middleweight champion told on-the-go boxing reporter Elie Seckbach:

I really visualised [Diaz winning]. The worst mistake Conor made was taking the fight lightly and going up so much in weight. Because of his pride, he did not beat Nate Diaz. Coming into the fight, I saw that coming.

Nate Diaz didn't beat him. McGregor beat himself. The way he fought, the way he went up in weight and came in too confident.

Conversely to his long lost Irish cousin, the red-headed Mexican is notoriously reluctant to jump in weight; not yet a fully-fledged middleweight in the eyes of his management, Canelo's team has stated he won't fight the real middleweight champion, Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin, unless the Kazakh sheds a few pounds.

The 25-year-old faces Amir Khan at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena at a mutually beneficial 155-pound catchweight on May 7th, just over two months before the same arena hosts McGregor's rematch with Diaz. Canelo is a big MMA fan, but as one of boxing's global superstars he says he'll never be tempted into the octagon:

I watch [MMA]. It's a contact sport, but there is none more beautiful than the sport of boxing. Boxing is the most beautiful thing, after women.

There are boxing fans and fans of the UFC. Both want to see blood, but there is a fondness for both.
