Conor McGregor has been stripped of his UFC featherweight title. The announcement was made on Saturday night during the broadcast of UFC Melbourne.

Since winning the title nearly a year ago with a 13-second KO of Jose Aldo, McGregor has not defended the belt.

Jose Aldo won the interim title at UFC 200 back in July when he beat Frankie Edgar. The Brazilian is now the undisputed UFC featherweight champion.

MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani reported on Friday that the UFC had been seeking to strip McGregor of the title for some time. The process was likely expedited by the scrapping of the UFC 206 headline fight between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson. That meant a new main event was required for December 10th in Toronto.

That new main event is an interim featherweight title fight between Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis.
