Khabib Nurmagomedov received a phone call from Vladimir Putin following his victory at UFC 229. The Russian President was proud of him said Nurmagomedov at the post-fight press conference.
Back in Dagestan, the part of Russia from which the UFC lightweight champion hails, there was also clear pride at his win.
This was the scene in a Makhachkala cinema with fans watching on as their hero forced McGregor into submission and then jumped out of the Octagon in search of another fight.
It was approximately 8am in the city when the fight finished.
The chaos at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas was matched by the chaos in Makhachkala as cars took to the streets and guns were fired in celebration of Nurmagomedov retaining his UFC lightweight title.
According to the Instagram account, liferusport, those who fired their guns were detained by police.
