It is the match that threatens to turn the sweet science into a circus.

Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have got plenty of free publicity out of talking about each other in the last year or so, as McGregor sees himself as outgrowing the UFC, and Mayweather as cash-hungry as ever.

Originally dismissed as nothing but empty posturing, the spectre of the fight actually happening has grown as time has passed, and rumours intensified earlier today. McGregor has canceled a public appearance in Dublin to fly to Las Vegas in mystery, with the Sun today reporting that the fight that both men had reached an agreement on a preposterously lucrative showdown.

This cranked the rumour mill into motion, with the idea of a Mayweather/McGregor showdown being treated online as the latest utterly mad thing to come to fruition, having been dismissed by so many as impossible.

In the last few moments, however, Mayweather has tweeted a brief statement to say that no such agreement has been made with McGregor, or indeed, anybody else.

Look, it might yet happen, as everybody realises just how much money they stand to bank from the whole endeavour.

And while often, if fighters wanted to keep speculation and publicity motoring along on potential fights, they would do anything but reject an idea that there have been talks about it happening, this story won't die with this tweet.
