Joao Carvalho's brother Alex spoke on RTE's Prime Time tonight.

Alex has been in Dublin since Joao took a turn for the worst last Sunday. He had watched the fight on his mobile phone from his home in the UK.

He became emotional on a number of occasions throughout the interview, particularly when relating a text he received from Joao after the fight, telling him he was all-right, and later when remembering how the doctors had told him there was nothing more they could do.

He added he does not understand why his brother's body has not been released by the authorities. Nine days here, he says, is too much.

He disagreed that the sport of MMA should be banned.

This was my brother's life. The fighters need to have more protection. Because all sports are dangerous. If you drive a Formula One car at 300mph, it's dangerous.

Someone needs to be - not guilty, it's different - responsible for what happened on Saturday night. I want just some answers. Nothing else. I don't have anything to say about MMA.

He said that his brother 'loved his sport' and he recalled the 'passion' and 'love' with which Joao spoke about MMA. He said Joao worked hard at his sport and he deserves that people should respect his name.
