Van Amersfoort Racing’s Sophia Floersch has issued a statement on Twitter after footage emerged of a horror crash during the Formula Three Macau Grand Prix on Sunday.

The German teenager's vehicle left the track and collided with a nearby marshals area. She was, however, conscious when taken to hospital although she is reported to have suffered a broken spine in the collision.

The incident happened towards the end of a straight where speed tracking had her clocked at 276.2km/h. Five people were reported injured including another driver, two photographs and a marshal.

Ferrari junior driver Guan Yu Zhou explained to Australian outlet News.au how the incident unfolded.

First of all it was such a scary moment. Sophia was really close to Jehan, so when Jehan braked early she had no time to react. She hit Jehan’s right-rear, and that spun her around straight into Lisboa, and she flew into the other car.

I just hope she’s OK.
