From the 1996 All-Ireland final team, James Horan, Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly have all managed Mayo. Liam McHale and James Nallen have served as selectors and the former was part of the Kevin McStay ticket that failed to win over the selection committee in 2014.
And now one of our most colourful pundits is getting "itchy feet".
David Brady is adamant that he will manage Mayo someday. The former midfielder told the Western People that he's determined to lead Mayo to the All-Ireland, regardless of whether they've reached the promised land in the mean-time or not.
He acknowledges he will need to balance the competing interests of work, life and the wife. In Balls, these are regarded as petty inconveniences which get in the way of football.
I’m getting itchy feet, I will manage Mayo someday, no doubt about it, and I don’t mean in a little capacity. I’m talking winning an All-Ireland with the seniors.
When? God knows, it needs 100% commitment. I’d need to find the right balance between work, football, life and the wife, but it will happen.
And whether we have won an All-Ireland before that, I won’t be leaving until I win one too.
We are fully behind this happening. Principally because we are looking forward to seeing David Brady throw "white elephants and red herrings" (to quote Bertie Ahern) in the direction of the media.
When Mayo win the All-Ireland under Brady, and he explains that it was all down to their use of headsets in training matches, then every other inter-county team will follow suit. It will revolutionise the sport.
