21 June 2008 was undoubtedly the greatest night in Russian football since the break up of the Soviet Union. A Russian team packed with attacking potential, playing an effective 4-3-3 system under a Dutch coach came, saw and conquered the Netherlands over 120 minutes. The night was perhaps most notable for the performance of one Andrey Arshavin, who scored one and put the Dutch to the sword. The Russian sbornaya has often failed to live up to expectations before and since, but that night in Basel did offer a glimpse of what the national team is capable of when it is in full flow.
