Jason Collins today became the first active male athlete in a major American sport to publicly come out as being gay. Collins has been a NBA player since 2001, for six teams, and last played for the Washington Wizards. He is currently a free agent.

Collins writes eloquently in Sports Illustrated about his struggle to come to terms with his sexuality. 'I kept telling myself the sky was red, but I always knew it was blue.'

Collins' announcent has been hailed as 'an important moment for professional sports' by Bill Clinton and Collins has received messages of support on Twitter from current NBA players like Kobe Bryant.
