Ireland is officially the ‘goodest’ country in the world according to a new survey.

The Good Country index analyses 35 different types of data from the United Nations, the World Bank and other organisations. It takes into account information on freedom of the press, the number of refugees and number of Nobel Prize winners.

This information is then broken down and countries are ranked under headings such as Science & Technology, Culture and Health &Wellbeing. Ireland topped the index as the country that contributes the most to humanity overall and was also crowned the best country in the world for prosperity and equality.

The UK came in at a respectable seventh place in the list and was deemed to be first in the world in terms of technology and science. Meanwhile, war-torn Iraq, Libya and Vietnam all finished joint bottom of the survey.

Simon Anholt, the policy adviser who masterminded the index explained the importance of ‘good countries’ in a statement on the survey’s official website.

“Today as never before, we desperately need a world made of good countries. We will only get them by demanding them: from our leaders, our companies, our societies, and of course from ourselves.”
