The statisticians at pornhub.com have done the world some service this year. This summer they told us how winning the World Cup affected porn viewership in Germany and now they have come out with more general stats for the year.
And while Ireland continue to plummet down the FIFA world rankings, these are clearly halcyon days for Irish porn lovers.
Quite simply, 2014 was an exceptional year for Irish fans of pornography.
Truly, after those dark years between the foundation of the state and the opening of that Ann Summers shop on O'Connell Street, Ireland has truly arrived on the world stage as far as erotica is concerned.
For this small nation proudly sits in 4th position in Pornhub's per capita page views listings for the year.
With 112 page views per person, Ireland form part of a definite 'big four' in terms of pornhub watching. For instance, Norway, back in fifth, are well behind with 98 page views per capita.
The other Champions League positions are occupied by the United Kingdom - with 115 page views per head of population.
The genial Canadians lie in 2nd place, while their big brother below them retain their position as world leaders when it comes to porn watching. Citizens of the United States racked up 123 views per capita.
Coming 4th in such a large poll should be a matter of national celebration and reflection.
While I personally have contributed nothing to this achievement, the men and women who have should be honoured as national heroes. An open topped bus through the capital is in order.
