On May 6th, 1998 in only his fifth game as a Major league starting pitcher, Kerry Wood struck out twenty Houston Astros to tie the MLB record for most strike outs in a game. It was only fitting then that Wood would call it quits after one more strikeout yesterday.

Kerry Wood to Chicago Cubs fans is the great what if. The flamethrower  destined alongside fellow cubbie phenom Mark Prior, to lead the north side of chicago to the promised land of a first world championship in nearly a decade. However, instead Wood's career was derailed by a series of injuries, and went by quicker than one of his trademark fastballs.  Of the thirteen seasons he played in the big leagues Woods landed on the disabled list  fourteen times as promise and hope were replaced by frustration and despair .

Although he never gave the Cubs fans what they wanted the most a World Series, he is still held with great affection in the hearts of north side of Chicago. For he allowed them to dream.
