Fans will be groaning and moaning as one of the most-anticipated fights in the history of the UFC has been delayed.

Jon Jones v Daniel Cormier for the light heavyweight belt has been pushed back to January 3 2015 after the champ suffered an injury in training earlier this week. It will now serve as the main event for UFC 182 in the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

The bout was initially scheduled for the UFC 178 event which features also a grudge match between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier on the main card. A flyweight title fight between Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson and Chris Cariaso has been bumped up from UFC 177 to replace the Jones v Cormier clash.

According to reports, Jones tore the meniscus in his left knee and sprained his ankle during wrestling practice in his training camp on Monday. Jones confirmed on his official Facebook page that he will undergo surgery tomorrow.

Cormier vented his frustration at having to wait for his first crack at the UFC belt to MMAFighting.com.

It's very disappointing. I started to train very hard. It's a little discouraging, but now I have time to get completely healthy.

I don't know how hurt Jon is but we have to remember that I took this fight with a pre-existing (knee) injury. I could have fought through it, I just wish he would have done the same.
