Canelo Alvarez has confirmed his re-match with Gennady Golovkin is off.

The announcement comes after Alvarez tested positive in February for the banned substance clenbuterol and which saw the Nevada State Athletic Commission file a formal complaint against the Mexican boxer.

The news was annouced by Alvarez's Golden Boy promoter, Eric Gomez.

From here on out, I will take increased precaution to ensure this never happens again.

It was recently confirmed that Alvarez tested positive for Clenbuterol. At the time his promotional company promised he will make himself available for more tests but it was later revealed it was two positive tests, one on February 17 and the other on February 20th.

The rematch was scheduled for May 5 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Golovkin's promotional company, which is run by Tom Loeffler, told ESPN yesterday that his fighter is still likely to fight in the same venue and date.

Anyone who booked a plane ticket or who was planning to come to Las Vegas for Cinco de Mayo weekend to see GGG fight, don't cancel your ticket because we're planning a GGG fight on May 5 whether it's against Canelo or somebody else.

Ireland's Gary "Spike" O'Sullivan and Demetrius Andrade have been spoken about as potential replacements.
