Having earned a bit of respect and a whole load of cash in the ring, Conor McGregor is reportedly on the verge of his return to the octagon.

McGregor hasn't fought in the UFC since breezing past Eddie Alvarez in Madison Square Garden in November of last year, having taken a sabbatical for the birth of his son and then to seal the Mayweather fight. At the confirmation of the Mayweather fight McGregor did assure fans that he would return to MMA, with a clash with Russian Khabib Nurmagomedov widely tipped.

That looks unlikely to be the case, however, with the alternative far more intriguing. The Sunday World reports that McGregor is on the verge of inking a deal for a third fight against American Nate Diaz, with the bout likely to take place in Las Vegas on December 30th of this year.

McGregor has a win and a loss against Diaz thus far in his career: he tapped out of their clash at UFC 186 but shaded the rematch on points, following a largely brutal five-round epic. Diaz hasn't fought since that defeat in August 2016.

A decisive third clash would cap a remarkable - and lucrative - 2017 for McGregor.
