Kerry's Bryan Sheehan has retired from inter-county football at the age of 32.
Sheehan amassed five All-Ireland titles and one All-Star during his illustrious career. The St. Mary's Cahirciveen man was a versatile figure having played as a forward, midfielder and even in goals as a minor. His free-taking ability in particular was a joy to behold and a marvel for the traditionalists, usually opting for an off-the-ground strike.
In a statement with Kerry GAA today Sheehan said
Today I would like to announce my retirement from the Kerry Senior Football Team. It has been an absolute honour for me to wear the Green and Gold jersey for 17 years, 14 of those with the Senior Team.
It was always a childhood dream to play for Kerry and to do so for so long fills me with great pride. I’ve been so lucky to play with some of the best players that the game has ever seen, and will be forever grateful for sharing an unbelievable journey with them. Thank you for all the memories, but more importantly for the friendships.
Sheehan captained Kerry on several occasions and played under Jack O'Connor, Pat O'Shea and Eamon Fitzmaurice. Fitzmaurice was full of praise for Sheehan:
On behalf of the management and players I would like to congratulate Bryan on his retirement. He has been an outstanding servant for Kerry stretching back to 2004, winning five All Irelands on the way. He has also had remarkable success at club level. His kicking ability has always been his biggest strength. His dead ball kicking is second to none and he is the ultimate stylist. I wish him all the best for the future, both on and off the field.
Sheehan endured a frustrating season last year suffering a rib injury and repeated hamstring trouble. He came off injured during South Kerry's semi-final victory in the Kerry county championship but returned for the final against Dr. Crokes to kick 0-07, although Dr. Crokes ran out 2 point winners.
Everyone at St Mary's would like to wish Bryan Sheehan all the best on his retirement from intercounty football. He has been a wonderful ambassador for the club and an exemplary role model for our youngsters.

He will continue to play for St. Mary’s and South Kerry.
