10 days on from his son David captaining Ireland in their crucial World Cup qualifier against Wales, John Meyler has been named as the new manager of the Cork hurlers.

The Cork county board today confirmed that Meyler has been appointed on a two-year term.

Born in Wexford, Meyler hurled for both the county of his birth and Cork. He won an All-Ireland medal with the Rebels in 1986.

Meyler has a lengthy inter-county management CV. He managed the Kerry hurlers to their most famous victory of the last 25 years, a 1993 Munster Championship win against Waterford. He returned to the Kingdom in the late 2000s, leading them to a 2011 Christy Ring Cup title. Meyler has also managed the Wexford and Carlow hurlers.

This year, Meyler took charge of the Cork U21s as they lost to Limerick in the Munster final. The team did have a dramatic victory over Waterford in the previous game though, a match which left Meyler feeling the emotion of the occasion.

He was also a selector under previous manager Kieran Kingston, a role which he also filled with the county in the early 2000s.

David tweeted his congratulations to his dad.

David himself has also added to his incredible month. Not only did he captain his country both in the Aviva Stadium and in one of our most famous away wins of all time, last week he was also named the Hull City player of the month for September.

Not only that, but FIFA 18 has been released. What a time to be a Meyler!
