Last week, JP Fitzgerald almost forced his way into golf folklore at Royal Birkdale. With Rory McIlroy at five-over for the opening nine holes on the first day of The Open, Fitzgerald turned to his golfer and said, "You're Rory McIlroy, what the fuck are you doing?". Today, all has changed utterly.

From there at Birkdale, McIlroy rallied, but ultimately once again missed out on a Major title, as Jordan Spieth snaffled the Claret Jug to set him level with McIlroy in the race for a Grand Slam. Spieth has won three majors since McIlroy last tasted success, and reports today suggest that the Irishman has made a major change.

Reuters are today reporting that McIlroy has sacked long-time caddy Fitzgerald, having worked together for nine years.

It is expected that McIlroy will confirm the news this week, and debut a replacement for Fitzgerald at the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational.
