Irish cyclist Dan Martin has won a thrilling stage 6 of the Tour de France after a gruelling 181km ride.

It was a fantastic response having come close during stage five as Peter Sagan won on a sprint finish yesterday. Today, Martin was rewarded for a courageous approach and made his move on the last climb of the Mur de Bretagne. It is his second Tour stage win and first since 2013.

Martin left QuickStep earlier this year for UAE Team Emirates, citing his ambition for a tour victory as the primary reason. He has secured a sixth and ninth place finish in the past two years and targeted a podium finish for 2018.

It was a battle of strong climbers but Martin finished ahead of French man Pierre Latour and Spaniard Alejandro Velverde. It means Greg van Avermaet retains the yellow jersey overall.
