Australia Staged Their Very Own Bizarre Opening Ceremony In An Empty Stadium

The Olympic Games got underway officially last night with a fairly spectacular Opening Ceremony staged by the hosts Brazil, with incredible light displays, fireworks and artwork. Not all athletes due to participate in the Games were present, of course. Padraig Harrington, for example, was absent due to his presence at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut. The Australian track and field squad also gave the events a miss because they are still finalising preparations ahead of their events which begin on August 12th.

This led them to proceed with their own rather unique opening ceremony, parading around an empty stadium in Florida and being entertained by scantily clad dancers.

The athletes proceeded to watch the 'real' Opening Ceremony together, cheering on their team-mates as they appeared.

Evidence of good team spirit in the Aussie camp ahead of the biggest festival of sport in the world.
