Reports are circulating that an Irish boxer has tested positive for a banned substance ahead of the start of the Olympic Games in Rio.

The Irish Examiner are reporting today that news of the positive sample emerged after the boxer took a drugs test in Ireland before flying out to Brazil, but Sport Ireland would not comment on the rumours and the world amateur Boxing Federation (AIBA) would not confirm any positive test result.

Irish boxer and gold medal hopeful Paddy Barnes was quick to comment on the allegations.

It is important to stress at this point that there is no confirmation of any positive test, but such a result would send shockwaves through the sport of boxing and the Irish team's preparations for the Olympics.
