So, the O'Donovan brothers have won a silver medal in the Rio Olympics. An incredible moment in Irish sporting history. One to be celebrated, especially by the state broadcaster.

Strange, then, that RTE Sport should choose the moment to, albeit indirectly, have a pop at a man who is currently perhaps Ireland's best-known sportsman in the world by re-tweeting a criticism of 'The Notorious', Conor McGregor.

The statement, 'Forget your Conor McGregors' is a strange one in itself. As to why RTÉ would retweet it in the midst of such a massive and special sporting moment for the country is another thing. And as to whether McGregor is a 'proper sporting legend' - well, that's a debate to be had somewhere down the line.

But one thing is beyond doubt: the O'Donovan brothers firmly established themselves in Irish sporting history today.
