In order for the Irish Naval Service to properly defend Ireland's shores, many important roles must be carried out. One of them is the Engine Room Artificer. The Naval Service is currently recruiting for this role and this thrilling video captures exactly what's required of this exciting position.

The Engine Room Artificer plays such an important role in the Naval Service. Firstly, they maintain a regular watch in the Engine Control Room.·   This involves monitoring running of main propulsion and auxiliary machinery and carrying out immediate action repairs on equipment to maintain the ship as a habitable platform.·  The ERA will report to the Chief ERA any deficiencies that occur in the Machinery Rooms. On top of that, they'll  carry out routine maintenance on all machinery including main engines, generators, pumps, air conditioning & refrigeration, sewage treatment units, fresh water generation plant, and fuel/oil purifying equipment. The ERA will also mentor trainee watch-keepers of the Engineering Branch. Last but certainly not least, the ERA is part of the Naval Armed Boarding Team during routine exercises and operations.

The video also captures the life of the role on an Electrical Artificer, which is another important job in the Irish Naval Services. The EA ensures that any electrical equipment onboard to maintain the ship as a habitable platform, is maintained and working correctly. He or she will carry out immediate repairs on a wide variation of electrical equipment.· Among other things, the EA ensures sufficient power generation to meet the needs of the vessel. The Electrical Artificer carries out routine maintenance on all electrical equipment including, generators, main switchboards, internal/external lighting, RHIB's (rigid hull inflatable boat), navigation and radio equipment, and auxiliary plant and pumps. On top of all of that, an EA will be part of the Naval Armed Boarding Team, and become a Sea Fisheries Protection Officer, carrying out routine fishery inspections on-board fishing vessels.
