Superchin Overcomes Willie O'Connor To Win Irish Darts Derby

Derry's Daryl 'Superchin' Gurney advanced to the third round of the PDC World Darts Championship, following a 3-2 victory over Limerick's William O'Connor.

Gurney started superbly and O'Connor had actually given up towards the end of the third set, putting his darts away and getting ready to go home, before Gurney missed a few match darts.

O'Connor then won the next two sets, setting up a final set decider, though Gurney held his nerve and advanced to face Chris Dobey.

Gurney was not impressed with the TV sound effects, as he was throwing late on, though he never panicked when O'Connor came back into the game.

"The audio boy, I hope I don't meet him out there out the back because he's doing my head in! I hope he's listening. Wait until I hit the double. Don't give the whole "AWW", whenever I miss the second dart for the game!

"The first time I went for the game obviously I think I've left 24 and I've got two darts at it. If I went outside I could have possibly hit it, but then I went inside and the audio man went "AWW".

"I ended up at double three and I was like I don't think I'm going to hit this. It was one of those ones! I still believed even when it went 2-2 and it was his throw, I thought I'm scoring well enough to give myself the opportunity. That's just the way it worked out," Gurney said when speaking to Sky Sports after the match.

Gurney faces Dobey in the third round. He was eliminated at that stage of the tournament last year, losing out to Glen Durrant.
