Sligo's Mona McSharry made history on Saturday night as she became the first Irish swimmer to win gold at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Indianapolis.
Racing in the 100 metres breaststroke, McSharry broke Ireland's national senior record as she touched the wall in 1:07.10.
Finishing ahead of the Canadian favourite Faith Nelson and the American Zoe Bartel, McSharry was delighted with the unexpected result:
It's wonderful to win here at the World Juniors, to stand on top of the podium and hear our anthem played. I'd like to thank everyone who has supported me on my journey so far.
This latest success extends what has been a profitable few weeks for the Grange native. Having claimed gold and silver medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m at the European Juniors earlier this summer, she will now look to Monday's 200m breaststroke with a keen sense that she could add more to her remarkable haul.
As she said herself: 'I'm not finished yet!'
