The Athletic are reporting that Ireland's no.1 Gavin Bazunu looks set to sign for Premier League side Southampton, after it was announced that Fraser Forster would be leaving the Spurs.

Dan Sheldon and Oliver Kay have written that Southampton are 'on the verge' of signing the young Bazunu, with the deal expected to exceed £10 million when all potential add-ons are taken into consideration.

Bazunu currently plays for Manchester City, but has been on loan at Rochdale, and with Portsmouth during the season just gone.

Bazunu will not be guaranteed to start however, as Southampton also have Alex McCarthy on the books, who was capped for England in 2018.

But given the excellence we have seen from Bazunu on the international stage, he looks set for the step up to regular Premier League football.

One of the main arguments levelled against him by Irish fans is that he plays in the lower leagues while Caoimhín Kelleher, despite lacking regular game time, plays for possibly the best club side in the world with Liverpool.

Although given Kelleher's earlier mistake against the Ukraine, Bazunu's stock will have risen even further this evening.

The news of his potential move to Southampton comes after it was reported last month that Everton were interested in signing the 20 year-old.

If he does complete the transfer it will continue the remarkable rise for the youngster, who signed for Manchester City from Shamrock Rovers when he was only 17 year of age.

While he was never capped for the senior team in Manchester, he has won ten caps for the Republic of Ireland, and has represented his country at underage level.

His loan moves to Rochdale and Portsmouth have also been hugely successful, and Bazunu was named as Portsmouth's Player of the Season for 2021/22.
