One of the biggest disappointments up to this point in Manchester United's season thus far has been the lack of contributions from Donny van de Beek.
The midfielder moved to Old Trafford from Ajax during the most recent transfer window, bringing with him some high expectations. The 23-year old had had a couple of stellar seasons in Amsterdam, leaving many excited at the the thought of what he could do in the Premier League.
While it is still very early days in his tenure at the club, it's fair to say he has disappointed. The Dutchman has not seen all that much game time and has largely failed to impress during the opportunities he has been given.
He looks like an odd fit at United. The club already had Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes in the attacking midfield role, with it unlikely that all three could function in the same side. It makes you wonder if he should have moved elsewhere.
That is certainly the opinion of former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal.
Appearing on Dutch television channel Ziggo, he said that van de Beek made the wrong choice during the summer.
I hope his time will come, but I don't think he made a good choice, I said that right away.
If you have Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, what position should Van de Beek be in?
He doesn't have the qualities of Pogba and Fernandes. And now you see that Pogba often doesn't start. Where should Van de Beek play then?
I think you could have seen that beforehand. There are so many teams, which could have done better justice to him, also in the top division. He is a boy with many qualities.
Things could certainly turn around for the midfielder, especially with Paul Pogba edging towards the Old Trafford exit door.
However, his talents would have been given a better opportunity to shine at a different club.
