The footballing community woke up to some shocking transfer news today with the rumour that Manchester City are interested in acquiring the talents of Paul Pogba from rivals Manchester United.

It is widely believed that Pogba will be leaving United for free this summer when his contract expires, bringing an end to a tumultuous and largely disappointing stint at Old Trafford.

Pogba has shown spells of his best football for United, but they have been all too infrequent, and when coupled with long spells on the sideline through injury, his once hugely anticipated transfer from Juventus has left a lot to be desired.

There is a long list of United signings in post-Ferguson years who have come to the club with high hopes and big reputations, and have flattered to deceive, but an element of this may be down to the lack of cohesion in the running of the club on and off the pitch.

Given the glimpses of excellence Pogba has shown for United, along with his consistent brilliance for France and his successful tenure with Juventus, Pep Guardiola would undoubtedly be confident of extracting this quality should City secure the services of the mercurial Frenchman.

However, where Pogba would fit into the City starting XI is unclear with his defensive capabilities questionable at times. But, given the gruelling season Premier League sides are faced with, Pogba would see plenty of pitch-time, and with the potential signing of Erling Halaand, they could perhaps help City to that elusive Champions League trophy.

Should this move happen for Pogba, he would join the likes of Denis Law, Owen Hargreaves, Carlos Tevez, and Peter Schmeichel as players who have moved from Manchester United to their cross-town rivals Manchester City.
