Ben Foster Describes His Fear Of Roy Keane When They Were Teammates
By Colman Stanley Updated

Even towards the end his Man United days, the high standards and fearsome attitude of Roy Keane were still in full flow, as detailed by ex-Man United goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Foster was speaking on talkSPORT when he relived his early Manchester days, which briefly intersected with the end of Roy Keane's United career.

I remember when I first signed for Man United and Roy Keane was still there and he would scare the life out of me. He would just say whatever was on his mind, and it would put everybody on the back foot straight away. So you don’t even know how to talk with him, don’t even know how to interact with him.

He would say it as it was so bluntly and so honestly, that you’d be going ‘oh my god you can’t say that,’ and he would just say it out loud in the changing room in front of grown men. He would scare me so badly that just speaking to him, ‘hello, hello Mr. Keane’. I swear on my life it was like that, everybody was like that with him."

Foster singled out the only game which he played with Roy Keane, and despite the fact that it was only a pre-season reserve match, the young keeper was not safe from the wrath of the legendary midfielder.

I played one game with Roy Keane and it was a reserve team game, because he was going through the motions of leaving Man United. I think they were on a pre-season tour and he had fallen out with the manager at this point, this is when he signed for Celtic.

And I played one pre-season game with him, and within five minutes of my very first reserve team game for Man United, I rolled the ball out to him, and because it wasn’t rolled at the right speed, he turned around, put his foot on the ball, and shouted at me.

And I’m this 22-year-old kid that’s just signed and I’m thinking, and he stopped the game to shout at me and I’m thinking wow this guy’s different.
