You'll have been hearing a lot about the Premier League Hall of Fame lately. With the league now nearly 30 years old, they have created the ultimate honour for players who've impacted the league most over the years.
While the honour would obviously carry a lot more weight if it included the hundred odd years of football that came before 1992, it is nonetheless a great achievement to be even nominated for the first class of any Hall of Fame, given the amount of years they have to harvest from.
Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry were the initial inductees last week, and now there is a shortlist of 23 for the next six to be inducted from the first class. Roy Keane is the only Irish player on the shortlist, and one of only eight non-English players.
Thierry Henry, the hall of famer himself, was the special guest on last night's Monday Night Football as he and Jamie Carragher made their case for the next six inductees. Both pundits were in full agreement on three of their list of six - Dennis Bergkamp, Eric Cantona, and Roy Keane.
Henry's time at Arsenal coincided with an intense rivalry with United, with Keane often the catalyst for the fiery relations between the teams. And despite all of that, Henry's was eager to pay tribute to how good a player Keane was, and not just the hard tackling tough man that he's often portrayed as these days.
I get annoyed when people talk about Roy Keane and about his tackles, and 'he was hard.' Yes, he was. He could tackle people, as we all know. But what a player he was. What a player he was! He could pass the ball. He could score goals.
I was in the stand when he scored that header in Turin to bring the team back in the semi-final of the Champions League. I was cup-tied, I couldn't play. I was, like, 'Wow!' The way he brought his team back into the game. The way he battled in midfield. The way he could galvanise everyone and make them play better by just who he was. Wow!
You know sometimes, I won't say what he was saying on the field at times to his teammates, but I was, like, 'Wow! I understand why they listen.'
He was a hell of a player. And people always talk about his tackles and how hard he was and this and that. He could play!
Keane won 7 league titles with Manchester United, including four as captain. He was named in the PFA Team of the Year five times and was a member of the PFA Team of the Century named in 2007.
