It's been a horrific start to the season for Manchester United with two defeats in their first two games. Sadly, for Erik ten Hag, the summer transfer window hasn't been much better with United desperately needing reinforcements, without much joy.

With the Frenkie De Jong transfer looking more unlikely as time goes on and the Cristiano Ronaldo saga still dragging on, we will take a look at the latest developments and rumours surrounding Manchester United.

Manchester United rumoured transfer targets

Adrien Rabiot

Last week, news circulated that Manchester United had agreed a transfer fee with Juventus for the signing of French midfielder Adrien Rabiot. After a week of negotiating with the player and his agent, who is also his mother, it looks like talks have broken down with trusted transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano saying "deal is completely 'off' and won't change unless something crazy happens on player side".

Romano also said that the Red Devils had no intention to pay a record salary and signing on fee to the Juventus man.

Jamie Vardy

One of the names that started to circulate around social media was Leicester's Jamie Vardy. It was reported by The Athletic via Metro that Manchester United were keen to bring Vardy to Old Trafford on an initial one-year-deal.

Vardy is now 35-years-old and would have perhaps been an ideal signing for United five years ago, but with injuries becoming more frequent for the former England striker, Vardy perhaps would not be what Manchester United need. Saying that, the club are desperate to bring a goalscorer in and if Ronaldo does end up finding a new club, a one-year-deal for Vardy could be a good short term fix.

Matheus Cunha

Spanish outlet Munda Deportivo and talkSport are reporting that Manchester United are preparing a £45 million bid for Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha.

Fabrizio Romano wrote on Twitter on Monday saying:

"Manchester United had direct talks with Matheus Cunha’s agents as with many others in the last few days.

"No agreement reached with Atletico Madrid as things stand.

"Atletico want more than €50m to sell Cunha this summer."

However, Cunha's release clause is believed to be €100m, which likely prevents a deal.

Christian Pulisic

Andy Mitten from The Athletic is reporting that Erik Ten Hag is keen to bring USA international Christian Pulisic to the club on a loan deal. Pulisic has slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge in recent years and with the arrival of Raheem Sterling, Pulisic is only going to see less game time this season.

The former Borussia Dortmund man came to the Premier League with very high expectations but never reached the heights he once promised. Pulisic could find regular game time at United a better option that warming the bench for Chelsea.

Hakim Ziyech

Another Chelsea player that is being linked with a move to Manchester United is Hakim Ziyech. The Moroccan previously worked under Ten Hag at Ajax and was instrumental to the side who enjoyed a great Champions League run in the 2018/19 season.

Reliable Manchester United journalist for Goal, James Robson has said that United are interested in bringing the attacking midfielder to the club.

Casemiro

With news circulating about Rabiot rejecting Manchester United's proposed personal terms, attention seems to be turning to Real Madrid defensive midfielder Casemiro. The Brazilian has been an ever-present in the Real Madrid starting team over the past six years, where he had worked up a tremendous partnership with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.
