If reports are to believed then the IRFU are exploring the idea of bringing back an Irish rugby sevens team in time for the 2020 Olympics in Japan.

TheScore.ie have heard murmurings that the 'IRFU plan to enter a team into Level 2 of the FIRA European Sevens circuit in the summer of 2015.' They would then move to Tier 1 in 2016 and play in a qualifier for the IRB Sevens World Series in 2017.

Should this all to plan then Ireland would be in with a shout of playing at the Olympics.

According to the reports there are also plans to organise a domestic sevens series to tap into the growth in popularity of the sport and to promote the Irish sevens team. It will be the first time Ireland have had a national sevens side since 2009, should all this come to fruition.

Here's footage of us playing against Croatia in sevens back in the grand old year of 1999.
