It was at the very least a debatable decision, but CJ Stander received his marching orders on his return to South Africa after his charge-down attempt inadvertently rendered his former u20s teammate Pat Lambie unconscious.
Stander's red card arrived with Ireland 10-3 up after 20 minutes, and going in at half-time after some ferocious defending (and 10 minutes a man further down following a Robbie Henshaw yellow) with the scores at 13-13, things looked ominous for Ireland.
Speaking to IrishRugby after what transpired to be a landmark victory for Joe Schmidt's side, Jordi Murphy - who himself was a colossus in Cape Town - explained that Schmidt's message only changed slightly at half-time; instead of becoming the first Irish team to win a test in South Africa, the challenge would be to become the first Irish men with 14 men to win a test in South Africa.
