After his omission from the match-day squad for this year's game in Cardiff, the nagging, if not overwhelming, sense was that D'arcy days in an Irish jersey had come to an end.

But O'Driscoll is adamant that D'arcy should be taken to the World Cup. Very adamant. Appearing on Off The Ball, he said that it would be 'stupid' not to bring D'arcy.

I think they'd be stupid not to bring him (to the World Cup)... If Robbie Henshaw is injured for some reason, then Gordon D'arcy starts at 12. You know what you're getting from him, defensively brilliant and a wealth of experience. Personally if I was Joe Schmidt, he'd be a great 29th to 30th man.

O'Driscoll said that the concussion problems that have beset Luke Marshall, in particular, meant that Ireland would be very unwise to leave D'arcy at home in the autumn.
