After six years as Leicester Director of Rugby, Richard Cockerill left Welford Road with 'immediate effect' on Monday.

The former England hooker disagreed with the decision, saying in the club statement that he still believed he was the man for the job.

The Daily Mail today reports some details from 'informed sources' regarding Cockerill's departure from the club.

Cockerill was given an ultimatum by Leicester chairman Peter Tom in mid-November that results would have to improve by Christmas or he would be shown the door.

The 38-0 defeat to Munster in the Champions Cup on December 10th was a crucial nail in Cockerill's coffin. Though, avenging that defeat a week later did, briefly, breathe some life into the chances of the 46-year-old remaining in the role.

While Cockerill filled the role of Director of Rugby, Aaron Mauger is head coach of the Tigers.

The relationship between Cockerill and Mauger appears to have been an inhospitable one. The two did not see eye-to-eye on various matters with Mauger apparently letting people at the club know that he was unable to work with Cockerill.

A particularly interesting detail from the Mail report regards what must have been an awkward dressing room exchange between Cockerill and the New Zealander following a 34-22 loss at home to Wasps in September.

One source claimed that after defeat against Wasps at Welford Road in September, Cockerill was in the midst of a post-match rant in the dressing room when Mauger, who favours a more softly-softly approach, asked him to leave.

Cockerill may also have been the subject of a player revolt with some telling the board it was time for a change.

Leicester have apparently been searching for Cockerill's successor for several weeks and Mauger, who takes over team affairs on an interim basis, is also likely to leave.

The result of the turmoil at Leicester could, ultimately, be to the benefit of an Irishman. It's mentioned that a new coaching structure at the club could be built around Geordan Murphy. The former Ireland international has been a coach at the club since 2013.
