Leinster have confirmed that Dan Leavy will miss the remainder of the season and also this year's World Cup.

The backrow suffered a serious knee injury in the second half of his side's 21-18 win against Ulster in the Champions Cup quarter-final on Saturday.

The 24-year-old had been on the pitch for just over ten minutes as a replacement for Sean O'Brien when the injury occurred.

"Leinster Rugby can confirm that Dan Leavy had an initial scan yesterday on a complex knee ligament injury but needs further assessment this week," said the province.

"He has been ruled out for the remainder of the season and into next season to include the Rugby World Cup."

Leavy had only just returned from an injury which had ruled him out of action for the entire Six Nations. He played 56 minutes against Edinburgh on March 22nd. His last appearance previous to that game had been three months earlier.
