, an Australian daily. How about this for an intro? Stereotypes travel.

Some years ago I was listening to ABC radio early one Sunday morning. The story was about the growing incidence of alcoholism in Ireland and the government's plans to address it. In a wonderful irony, or as the result of the producer's sense of humour, the story segued to the sports news.

"Overnight in sporting news, the Irish rugby team has beaten England at Twickenham for the first time in 15 years."

You can just see the government: "Well, I suppose we could wait another week for those reforms."
