Over the last number of years, we have seen a few examples of high profile GAA figures branching out and attempting to make a career in other sports.

Jim McGuinness is perhaps the most memorable one, with the Donegal man having had soccer coaching spells in the likes of Scotland, the USA, and China after his time with the county came to an end.

Another big name in the world of Gaelic football has also linked up with another sport in recent times.

Jonny Cooper had an incredibly successful inter-county career with Dublin, winning eight All-Irelands and ten Leinster titles during his time in blue.

He would step away from the Dublin setup in 2022, with his chosen career path now taking him into the world of professional rugby.

Cooper currently runs a leadership company, something that saw him travel to La Rochelle last year to see how Ronan O'Gara and his side operate. Having developed a good relationship with O'Gara, he would be introduced to Gloucester director of rugby George Skivington.

He was clearly impressed with Dubliner, bringing him into the club's setup for the 2023/24 season.

Speaking to Rugby Pass, Skivington explained the impact Jonny Cooper has made on the team in recent months.

I met Jonny in La Rochelle last summer and Ronan knew him and he is a very smart guy. He has held some leadership workshops with us and there are so many different leaders – those who do it from the front and others who do it in the herd.

Just finding out the balance is key and Jonny works on leadership skills and Jonny is highly decorated in Gaelic sport and has lot of experience. Jonny has been working with us this season and has been great for the guys.

It will be interesting to see what other clubs and sports Jonny Cooper links up with in the future, although it seems clear that he is already becoming highly regarded in the world of rugby.
