With this evening's Rugby World Cup one of the biggest sporting events of the decade so far, it was always likely that some big names were going to descend upon Paris to take in the game between New Zealand and South Africa.

The likes of Novak Djokovic, Rita Ora, and Taika Waititi were just some of the stars in attendance at the game, although none of them had an official part to play at the fixture.

That is quite the comparison to one Game of Thrones star, whose role at the Stade de France has led to plenty of confusion.

Viewers confused by 'Game of Thrones' star's presence at Rugby World Cup

The Webb Ellis Cup is one of the most striking trophies in all of sport, with that being the prize that New Zealand and South Africa were playing for this evening.

There is always a bit of pageantry surrounding the unveiling of the trophy at big events such as this one, with the Rugby World Cup final no exception.

Dan Carter was the rugby legend selected to bring the cup onto the pitch, a natural choice considering his standing in the game. However, it was his partner in doing so that has raised eyebrows.

For a reason that nobody can quite comprehend, the Kiwi would be accompanied by Game of Thrones actor Sophie Turner.

Turner is a very famous actor, although it was quite strange to see her bring the Webb Ellis Cup onto the pitch at the Stade de France.

The viewers were certainly confused by the whole sequence of events.

An odd one.

Sophie Turner is a rugby fan, something she has spoken about in the past. Clearly, someone at World Rugby felt that the final could do with a bit of extra star power.

One social media user had a theory that she was recruited as it was the only way we would see a British representative at this year's Rugby World Cup final.

Fair.

We're already looking forward to seeing what random actor they wheel out for the 2027 Rugby World Cup final.
