Long Memories: A Scottish Legend Has Taken A Pop At Matt Williams

Long Memories: A Scottish Legend Has Taken A Pop At Matt Williams

Matt Williams's contributions on the TV3 panel have been generally praised but they have long memories in Scotland.

Williams coached Scotland between 2003 and 2005. His reign is remembered badly with Scotland winning only three out of seventeen matches in that period, though that seems very much of a piece with their record over the past decade generally.

During his time there, Williams announced that Scotland was not going to become 'a feeder for the Zurich Premiership' and he would only pick players who were playing club rugby in Scotland.

He also told 30 year old Gregor Townsend his international career was over. Townsend disagreed that he was finished and he hasn't forgotten this slight.

Can one detect sarcasm here...
