Jonny Wilkinson stared at his feet. John Inverdale's voice had the most sombre of sombre tones. Even Michael Lynagh looked like he was about to sit through three hours of people wishing him condolences, and his country had just hammered England.

ITV's coverage of the Sweet Chariot's capitulation to Australia took on a funereal quality after the game.

Considering that the hosts had just been eliminated - at the group stage - maybe it was warranted.

From an Irish perspective, it's just amusing to watch.
