Following the sensational news of the appointment of Eddie Jones as head coach of Australia, after the sacking of Dave Rennie, people have been quick to point out that there is a very real chance of Jones leading his new side against England - who recently gave him the boot - in the knockout stages of next year's World Cup.

Indeed, some had already been discussing the prospect of Jones working with Australia in recent weeks, albeit in an assistant capacity alongside Rennie.

James Haskell was one of these people, and in a recent interview with RugbyPass, he outlined the possibility of Eddie Jones' sacking from England potentially coming back to haunt them at the World Cup.

I think it's sad for Eddie, and the real reality is that Eddie is going to end up coaching Australia in the semi-final or quarter-final against England in a World Cup because he's got no compete clause.

Yes this one coming up. I would say Rennie's under pressure, Rennie loses a few more games, Rennie's going to be picking up the phone to Eddie Jones.

Why would you not want a man who has taken Australia to World Cups, who has got the best records.

Following his appointment to Australia, Eddie Jones released the following statement:

"The Wallabies squad is a really talented group of players with good depth – if we can have everyone fit and healthy going into the World Cup this year, I am confident that we can go to France and break the 24-year drought of winning the Rugby World Cup.

“I saw how gutsy the Wallaroos were in the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand last year – it looks like there is a real spirit in that group that will drive the women’s programme forward ahead of their next World Cup in 2025.

“I am really looking forward to getting back home and getting stuck in.”
