Joe Rogan has been forced to apologise to New Zealanders, after calling some of the country's basketball players "fucking dummies" for performing a haka before a match with the United States.

On a recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience with the actor and comedian Hannibal Buress, the duo were discussing battle cries before Buress brought up a story of the nation's basketball team.

From there, the duo watched a pre-match haka from the 2014 World Cup. The United States would win the match 98-71.

Rogan's comments caused offence in New Zealand when he compared the players to children.

You're playing NBA superstars you fucking dummies... It seems stupid. If you're playing basketball, it's stupid.

Since news of his comments reached New Zealand, Rogan took to Instagram to apologise to the nation for what he called being "ignorant to what the Haka means to the culture of the people of New Zealand".

I got a bunch of messages today from people in New Zealand pissed off that I made fun of people doing the haka at a basketball game. For the record, before I apologize to anyone I offended I just want you all to know that I've also called it "one of the dopest war dances the world has ever known".

Co-leader of the Maori Party, Marama Fox told the New Zealand Herald that she was sending an invitation to Joe Rogan to travel to New Zealand to see the haka from close quarters.

Obviously he has no understanding of indigenous culture in his own country or around the world.

It shows a very close-minded point of view and I invite him to come to New Zealand and we can show him how to do it properly and give him a lesson on what it really means.
