The potential match between the Anzacs and the Lions has been mooted to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli. ANZAC was the term by which the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, which fought in the battle, were known. John O'Neill, former head of the Australian Rugby Union, has called for the match to go ahead in Twickenham straight after the World Cup. Quade Cooper, the Kiwi born Australian international, has also spoken in favour of the potential game. If the Lions can not be assembled, the ANZAC's will look to play a Barbarian style World XV.

Such a match is not unprecedented. When the Lions toured Australia in 1989. The Lions beat an Anzac team, filled with names like Campese, Jones, Lynagh, Farr Jones the match 19 - 15.

Irish centre Brendan Mullin scored a fantastic try early in the second half and two late drop goals from Scottish duo, Craig Chalmers and Gavin Hastings sealed victory for the Lions.
